Figgy Duff is a traditional Newfoundland pudding that’s been warming Canadian homes during the holidays for generations. Despite the name, there are usually no figs in sight “figgy” is an old English word for raisin, and “duff” simply means pudding. This boiled or steamed dessert is made with breadcrumbs, dried fruits, molasses, and spices, often served alongside roast dinners or with a drizzle of sweet sauce for dessert.
Its roots trace back to British plum puddings, carried across the Atlantic by early settlers. Over time, Figgy Duff became a uniquely Newfoundland staple. Frugal, hearty, and full of
festive flavour. It’s a celebration of resourcefulness and comfort, with ingredients that would have been readily available in even the most remote coastal pantries.
For this blend, we’ve taken inspiration from the rich, spiced tones of the dish and the festive table it graces. Merino wool in midnight, heather, loganberry, and rose presents the deep
warmth of molasses and berries, while rose fibre lends a gentle sheen and softness, like the glossy surface of the duff just out of the steamer. The result is cosy, lush, and full of character, a homage to a dessert that’s humble, hearty, and deeply loved.
