The WoW Flock Diaries: Lambing
For a new shepherd lambing is one of the most exciting and terrifying times of year and when the ewes arrived they were only a couple of months away from it. They took up residence in their winter grazing alongside the flock of one of our experienced shepherd friends (Bammy) and we all waited with bated breath. Well, we were like expectant parents checking in over and over while Bammy was as cool as a cucumber.
Sheep can be very independent little souls and they will do what they want to do, in their own time, on their own terms. We missed every single birth. Our ewes knew what they were doing and chose to lamb when there weren’t any people staring at them intently over a fence. We don’t blame them. It is always best for a ewe to lamb on her own and for people to take a step back unless an intervention is needed, after all, nature was doing this long before humans got involved. And just like that, the flock doubled in size. It wasn’t quite overnight, but it was definitely within the space of a week which is an absolute dream for shepherds!
We were told that lambs are great time-wasters, and that we’d spend far too much time just watching them - we didn’t think this was true until we saw them. The big ‘problem’ was that the winter grazing was just down the road from HQ, so it was really easy to pop out at lunch and then realise you’ve been staring at incredibly cute sheep for nearly two hours!
As spring progressed the lambs grew and we knew it was time to move them to their summer grazing. We’re used to moving wool around, just not while its on the back of a sheep. That was a whole new adventure…
