Inspiration

Life in London tips its hat to the festive froth of the Tom and Jerry; a warm, spiced cocktail that was once a staple at Christmastime parties across Britain and North America. Invented in the early 19th century (and possibly named after Pierce Egan’s popular novel Life in London), this drink predated eggnog’s rise to fame, bringing together brandy, rum, egg, sugar, and warm milk or water into one frothy, decadent delight. Though it’s largely faded from modern menus, the Tom and Jerry was once the drink of the season, served from ornate punch bowls in bustling parlours, sipped beside fireplaces while the snow fell thick outside. It spoke of cheer, indulgence, and a little seasonal showmanship (since whipping up the egg base took real flair).
