Sheep & Shepherds Flock to York Minster
North East sheep farmers are holding a special sheep and shepherds event at York Minster on 12 October to coincide with the Campaign for Wool's Wool Week.
The special event at York Minster will see an educational and entertaining show put on right outside the South Door featuring different breeds of sheep. The show will conclude with a sheep shearing demonstration and alongside will be a spinning and weaving display showing how a fleece is turned into something beautiful and useful.
Also unveiled on the day will be a specially-commissioned 5" x 3" Union Jack made entirely from Yorkshire wool - spun, dyed and crocheted by Sheffield spinner Diane Fisher.
The event will run from 11.00am to 3.00pm and is open both to members of the public and pupils of the near-by Minster School, who as well as enjoying the sheep show will even get a chance to try their hand at spinning.
Three repeats of the half-hour sheep show will commence at 11.00am, 12.30pm and 2.00pm. The stars of the show will be available "backstage" throughout the morning. The Murmuring Wheel Group will be demonstrating spinning and weaving techniques throughout the event.
The event will also offer a final chance for people to sign the petition. Anyone unable to make it on the day can sign online at www.countrysideonline.co.uk/wool-petition
Wool Week Event
Felt maker Pat Wood and her friend weaver Alice Jackson will be holding an exhibition to celebrate Wool Week from 15 to 20 October at Ichameleon, Thoroughfare, Halesworth, Suffolk. They are hoping their exhibition will draw attention to the benefits of using and wearing wool - a wonderful sustainable product. Pat said: "Wool has been undervalued for years. Hooray that someone is doing something about it."
Wool Week - Give Fleece a Chance!
The Royal-backed Campaign for Wool is hotting up as we head towards a special Wool Week commencing on 11 October.
Many UK high street retailers will be promoting all things woolly, but it seems the highlight of the week will be the turfing of the famous Savile Row (the tailoring district of London) so that sheep can graze amongst the garments their fleeces have helped to create. Now that will be a sight worth seeing!
If you are holding any special events to celebrate Wool Week, let us know and we will feature them on our Twitter and Facebook pages. Email jenny@worldofwool.co.uk with details.

Future of Wool Healthy says ITWO Congress
The 79th Congress of the International Wool Textile Organisation (IWTO) ended on a very positive note for the future of wool. The event took place from May 3 5, 2010 in Paris. Under the theme "Wool Change to a Healthier and Safer Environment", prominent speakers made the event a valuable experience, presenting a broad spectrum on the current developments of the global wool industry.
Environmental issues The Congress under the topic Wool Change to a Healthier and Safer Environment attracted some 300 delegates from 23 countries around the world. A broad range of prominent speakers made the Congress a valuable experience, showing a broad spectrum on the current developments of the various stages of the wool industry. The Congress has impressively shown through a number of IWTO run projects and other initiatives that wool as material for apparel, interior textiles and technical textiles is having a remarkable renaissance as the preferred choice for many applications, traditional and new ones, especially through its many natural attributes and ecological benefits.
